Growing Up With Pets is an educational program devoted
to bringing parents a resource for information and advice on how to help
them foster strong, healthy relationships between their children and their
pets.
Our first-of-its-kind website contains valuable insight for parents who
are considering getting a pet, as well as pet owners who are expecting
a child. This is the only place on the web that gives parents such a well-rounded,
comprehensive resource for their parenting and pet owner needs.
Mission
and Goals
Growing Up With Pets aims to strengthen all aspects of the child-pet relationship
through these three goals:
1. Create a resource where families can find
comprehensive information regarding health care and behavior issues related
to children and pets. Our research shows that families, physicians and
veterinarians are interested in this information and have voiced a concern
that it is not currently easily accessible or simple to understand. We
strive to make the information easy to access and understand. We also
believe the information we provide should be reliable and trustworthy.
Therefore, respected veterinarians were involved in our research and have
given advice for the materials and content of the Growing Up With Pets
program.
2. Raise awareness of the risks of zoonosis
(the transfer of parasitic infection or disease from animals to humans)
and the recommendation for year round parasite prevention. More than one
third of the nation's dogs are infected with gastrointestinal parasites.
And more than 27 million dogs in the U.S. are not being preemptively treated
for heartworm disease. It is important that parents are aware that some
of these parasites not only affect animals but can be transferred to humans,
as well. The Centers for Disease Control estimates that between one and
three million people are zoonotically infected each year in the U.S. The
CDC recommends year round parasite prevention to help reduce the incidence
of zoonosis.
3. Help parents recognize that SENTINEL®
